What’s your biggest barrier to self-care and mindfulness?

This week's blog is a guest edition from Shea.

Shea is a SE London based Independent Consultant and leader with Neal's Yard Remedies Organic, the home based branch of the pioneering organic, ethical skincare, inner health and aromatherapy blue bottle folks!

She is passionate about helping make essential oil based skincare more accessible and easy to understand and runs fun pamper events, workshops and masterclasses online and in the community.

If you can't decide/ don't know what's best for your skin/home/family, Shea can help!

Shea also mentors an ever growing team of men and women from all walks of life to add NYRO to their existing businesses (especially beauty/massage/holistic therapists etc) as well as supporting those who join us more as a hobby or side hustle. She'd love to hear from you if you like the sound of the opportunity.

Shea has hundreds of conversations each month about skincare, self-care, aromatherapy and wellness. And the two things that come up most often are “I don’t have time” and “I don’t know where to start”.

So, for this Aromatherapy Week, Shea wants to show you how easy it is to include little moments of aromatherapeutic joy into your day, giving mindful minutes of self-care through things you are already doing.

Let start with hands!

You wash your hands every day, many times. This can be something you simply do to get clean. Or it can be a moment of focussing on yourself, on aromas, on the sensations.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve all spent so much time, 20 seconds at a time in fact, washing our hands.

Imagine all those hand wash sessions becoming time for you to breathe deeply and ease some tension

By choosing an essential oil based Hand Wash, you can give yourself a boost, calmness, balance- whatever you think you need most, through this most basic act of hygiene.

Take, for example, the essential oil blend of Geranium and Orange – Geranium is balancing, helps put you back on an even keel when things feel out of sorts. Orange, sweet and uplifting, energises and lifts your mood.

Breathing these scents in as you scrub, taking just a few seconds to check in and feel that aroma flowing through your body, can be a moment of joy countless times a day.

Furthermore, if you follow the World Health Organisation hand washing protocol (which actually says 40-60 seconds!), or look at those posters that appear in every public toilet nowadays, you’ll see that this is actually encouraging deep self hand-massage.

Circular movements on the palm, rotational rubbing of your thumbs etc, these motions, when you focus on them and become aware of how they actually feel, can relieve tension and aches just as effectively as when you specifically set out to massage your hands.
All that in less than a minute, doing something you are already doing multiple times a day.

But what about the rest of the your body? Well, the same principles apply! Don’t think you have time for facial massage? You do!

You cleanse your face, remove your make-up, apply moisturiser daily, perhaps twice… doing this mindfully, making yourself aware of the sensations on your skin as you touch it can transform this simple practice.

And as with the hand wash, choosing an Essential Oil based product will add an extra layer of care to your regime.

My top recommendation for easy ways to get this boost is the one pot wonder, Wild Rose Beauty Balm. For busy people who maybe get overwhelmed about product choice, this single jar does it all!

Use it as a cleanser, as a facial oil, as a mask, an exfoliator or a deep moisturiser, on nails, lips and much more! Applying it with circular motions, starting at the jaw line, paying extra attention to your temples and bridge of your nose, will boost radiance, deeply nourish and feel wonderful.

And the aromatherapeutic blend of essential oils Geranium, Rosemary, Frankincense, Palmarosa and Patchouli gives an intense feeling of being cared for, nourished and calm. Do contact me for a facial massage routine you can follow if that helps.

You could also try Orange Flower Facial Oil, which with Neroli Essential Oil is like a hug in a bottle or Frankincense Intense Lift Cream, which helps soothe your soul, whilst keeping skin plump and smooth. All the while just while applying your skincare as you do everyday.

But products aside, you can take steps to add more mindful moments in every bit of your daily routines- when you wash your hair, rub your feet… anytime you do anything to your body, you can do it in a way that makes it a deeper act of self-care than just applying products.

Breathe, feel the sensations and enjoy the benefits, hour after hour.
