The Importance of Rest and Play in the Life of a Neurodivergent Business Owner

If you've spent any time around these parts, you'll know I'm a big fan of rest and play - a topic that's often overlooked but absolutely essential, even more so if, like me, you're a neurodivergent business owner.

So grab a cup of tea, put your feet up and let me tell you more...

As someone who's walking the path of a neurodivergent entrepreneur, you know the hustle and bustle of the business world all too well. There's no denying that it's a thrilling journey, but it's also one that demands a lot of your energy, focus, and creativity.

That's where the twin pillars of rest and play come in.

The Neurodivergent Entrepreneur's Balancing Act

Let's acknowledge something fundamental: being neurodivergent in the business world is a superpower, not a hindrance. Your unique perspective, problem-solving abilities, and unbridled creativity are your secret weapons that can support your business to thrive. But with great power comes great responsibility, and that's where the need for balance arises.

Rest Is Your Recharge Time

In the world of neurodivergent minds, rest isn't just a luxury; it's a necessity. Your brain, with its fascinating quirks, often needs extra care and time to recharge. This isn't about being lazy; it's about giving your mind what it needs to be at its best.

It can feel counterproductive, and you may even carry stories about rest being something you have to earn (blame capitalism) so I understand the resistance you may have to prioritising and making time for proper rest, but trust me when I say that when it comes to navigating the complex terrains of the business world, rest is your ally.

Play: Your Creative Oasis

Play is not just for children - it's for you, too! Play is where your creativity blossoms, your problem-solving skills sharpen, and your joy soars. It's where you embrace your inner child and let your imagination run wild.

For a neurodivergent biz owner play might involve taking a break to doodle, letting your mind wander into the realms of a good science-fiction book, or immersing yourself in a gripping fantasy series on Netflix. It's about doing things that inspire you, spark your curiosity, and ultimately feed your creative spirit.

The Dance of Rest and Play in Your Daily Life

So, how do you strike the perfect balance between rest and play in your daily life as a neurodivergent business owner? Here's a game plan for you:

Scheduled Rest Breaks: Just like your business meetings and to-do lists, schedule regular rest breaks like they are a standard part of your day, not a bonus luxury or something to fit in if you have the time. Set aside time for self-care, whether it's a bubble bath, a nature walk, or practising some shadow work. Treat it as an important business appointment with yourself

Playful Self Connection: Incorporate time spent with yourself and by yourself into your routine. This could be a short meditation or even a moment of deep breathing. It's a way to infuse connection into your daily life and find inspiration in the ordinary. (and check out my Dark Moon Club if you'd like some ways to do this in just 30 minutes a month - you can join for just £4.50 here).

Hobbies and Interests: Don't forget to nurture your hobbies and special interests. Set aside time to engage with these passions, whether through reading, discussions, or creative projects.

Embrace Your Quirks: As someone who's autistic and has ADHD, embracing my quirks and using them to my advantage rather than focusing on my weaknesses has been a game-changer, and much kinder than casting judgment on myself. Your unique way of thinking is an asset, so don't feel pressured to conform to a neurotypical mould.

Celebrate Achievements: Celebrate your achievements, big and small. Recognise that your journey as a neurodivergent entrepreneur is an inspiring one. Share your successes with your network, and be proud of what you've accomplished.

In the world of neurodiversity, success isn't about fitting into a predefined mould. It's about creating a life and business that align with who you truly are. The importance of rest and play in your journey can't be overstated. These aren't distractions; they are your tools for growth, resilience, and innovation.

Once you begin to trust that and see the results that come from taking more time for yourself, I guarantee the results will be rewarding and worthwhile.

Stay inspired, stay curious, and keep embracing the magic of being unapologetically you. Your adventure is just beginning! 🌈🌟
